Francisco Garcia, educator, curator, and award winning photographer. His work has appeared in numerous exhibitions and publications. American of mixed heritage, born and raised in San Francisco. He is a decorated Vietnam combat veteran. He received 2 Purple Hearts, and a Bronze Star, while in-country. He recently he has begun an extended photographic project revisiting former battle zones in Southeast Asia. He is also known for his distinctive, smoky portraits of jazz musicians, including Max Roach, India Cooke, Jon Jang, Francis Wong, and many others. Writing for Crisis Magazine, Carla Maria Verdino-Sullwold has said about Garcia's portrait of jazz musician Sonny Rollins: "Even the potent realism of Francisco Garcia's riveting photographs is tempered with the transitory poetry of fragmented light." In the striking gelatin silver print of Sonny Rollins, the artist used a timed exposure to capture dancing flickers that emanate from the bass of the saxophone and drums. "These disembodied sparks skip across the chiaroscuro of the print's surface with the spontaneous improvisation of jazz notes." Garcia received his M.F.A. in photography from the California College of Arts and Crafts, and has taught in various community. colleges, community, private, and college art programs.
